Community Coalition Strengthens Its Home Base

Los Angeles' Vermont Knolls neighborhood is a high-need community of approximately 22,000 residents of which nearly one-third have incomes under the federal poverty level. Fifty-five percent of residents have less than a high school diploma, which results in limited job and economic opportunities. There is also a severe shortage of community spaces available to deliver critical social and human services.

Medina Creative Housing Develops Opportunities for Adults with Disabilities

Medina Creative Housing (MCH) helps individuals with disabilities successfully integrate into their communities. MCH assists students, ages 18 to 30, who have completed high school and wish to enroll at Cuyahoga Community College's Brunswick campus through their unique project, Medina Creative Transitions. This program links a supportive residential environment with the opportunity to succeed in college.

Supporting CDFI and CDE Success through Certification, Compliance Monitoring and Evaluation

I was pleased to attend the recent CDFI Coalition Institute here in Washington, DC. In addition to participating on a panel discussing the latest developments at the CDFI Fund, I along with other members of the Certification, Compliance Monitoring and Evaluation (CCME) team, held ?office hours? to provide one-on-one assistance to a number of CDFIs.  It was time well spent for me and my teammates.  In this blog, I want to share these same updates and plans with the larger CDFI and CDE community.

Music to My Ears: The Financial Services Sector Helping Build the Capacity of CDFIs

How many of you still remember when CDs made you think of music? I still remember using the association of music CDs to get consumers interested in opening checking or savings accounts and Certificates of Deposits (CDs). Today it is CDFIs that are a focus for me. Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) are organizations that aim to provide capital and technical assistance to families, individuals and small business owners who are unable to receive traditional bank loans.

Jovita Carranza is the Treasurer of the United States. In that capacity, she serves as a principal advisor to Secretary Mnuchin and focuses on increasing participation in our economy by fostering financial capability and sustainability. In addition, she oversees the Office of Consumer Policy and coordinates the interagency Financial Literacy and Education Commission. Treasurer Carranza also maintains the historic role of advising the Secretary on matters relating to coinage produced by the U.S. Mint. She has oversight responsibility for all operations of the U.S. Mint, including Fort Knox. Treasurer Carranza earned her MBA from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, and received executive, management, and financial training at the INSEAD Business School in Paris, France; Michigan State University; and the University of Chicago.

Jason Boehlert is the Program Manager for Legislative and External Affairs for the CDFI Fund. In this role he oversees the CDFI Fund's Congressional and public affairs activities. He has over 20 years legislative and communications experience in the housing, community development, and economic development sectors. Prior to joining the CDFI Fund, he served as Executive Director of the National Association of Local Housing Finance Agencies (NALHFA) and National Association for County Community and Economic Development (NACCED). He has also held government relations positions with the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), National Association of Development Organizations (NADO), and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). He holds an MA from The George Washington University and a BA from Santa Clara University.

Oscar Gonzales is a researcher and Associate Manager for the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund). Mr. Gonzales currently serves as the Acting Program Manager for the CDFI Fund’s Office of Financial Strategy and Research.

Previously, he worked for the United States Congress at the U.S. Congressional Research Service (CRS) in the area of federal economic and community development programs, providing policy research support for members of Congress and Congressional Committees. His policy portfolio at CRS included federal programs such as the CDFI Fund, the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Economic Development Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Community Development Block Grant program at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Prior to working at CRS, he worked in the Division of Insurance and Research at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, analyzing the financial performance of community banks and conducting research on the impact of national disasters on financial institutions and local communities. He is completing his Ph.D. at the University of Maryland.
